Sales More Stressful Than Moving House

DO YOU dread the thought of the High Street sales? You're not alone.

A survey suggests that millions of us find traipsing round the shops more stressful than moving house.

Of those questioned, 69 per cent dislike the crowds, while some 60 per cent become frustrated that they cannot find what they're looking for because shops are so 'untidy'.

Almost half of us (47 per cent) cannot stand queueing for fitting rooms and checkouts.

No wonder then that of those questioned in the research for website showroomprive.co.uk, five per cent - equal to 2.5 million people - said braving the sales was worse than buying a new home.

Sixteen per cent even said they would prefer a trip to the dentist.

Many of these may be likely to stay indoors and do their shopping on the internet - and a second survey suggests they will be doing most of it tomorrow.

Dubbed Mega Monday, the day is expected to be the busiest online shopping day of the year as millions scour the internet for Christmas bargains and gifts.

Sales are expected to reach ?424 million over the course of the day, or nearly ?300,000 a minute.

Shopping comparison website Kelkoo says people are stocking up early because extreme weather caused a backlog of deliveries of online orders last December.

Oklahoma Corporation Commission Crackdown on Moving Companies Continues

New regulations for Oklahoma’s moving companies mean more information and protection for the customer whose worldly possessions are being hauled to a new place.

The rules went into effect July 1, 2010, but Oklahoma’s Corporation Commission, which regulates intrastate transportation of household goods, is still contacting companies to ensure they know how to become compliant.

The major points of the new rules cover five areas. Household goods movers must provide the consumer with a written estimate. Movers must give the customer a “Moving in Oklahoma” brochure, created by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Advertising must include the U.S. Department of Transportation number for the moving company. Movers also must get a certificate from the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Intra-city movers are included in the regulations along with companies that work around the state or out of state.

“Consumers now have tools they can use to better know something about the mover that they’re talking to and what is expected by the mover,” said Matt Skinner, public information officer for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. “Regulation in general is moving toward a consumer base – giving consumers the information they need to make a decision. But it also lets the companies know what they need to do to be operating legally, so it protects them as well.”

Marchi McCartney, transportation division director for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, said 78 movers have become certified so far; some were already certified when the new rules went into place. The certification process includes the commission’s verification of a company’s insurance, she said. Certification also requires a $100 fee, she said. Certified companies are listed on the commission’s website for public perusal.

“Many household movers under the old rules had to have authority from us, but there were others who did not have to. Now they all have to,” Skinner said. “It is...

Last-Mover Advantage

BY THE summer of 2005 the future of music seemed to be digital. Apple was selling iPods by the boatload, and the iTunes store was doing brisk business. But in Germany, a different path was being laid. Universal began to tinker with CD packaging, offering lots of "deluxe" editions of albums while putting others into cheap cardboard sleeves to appeal to bargain-hunters. "We did not forget about the physical market," says Frank Briegmann, head of Universal's German operation. Neither did German consumers.

Despite iTunes, piracy and a shrinking population, CD sales have fallen much more gently in Germany than elsewhere. Germany used to compete with France for the title of Europe's second-biggest music market, well behind Britain. It is now Europe's biggest market. The country has exported pop acts like Tokio Hotel (pictured) across Europe. Unheilig, a band that sings in German, popped up on last year's global top 40 albums chart, beating the likes of Gorillaz and Robbie Williams.

As customers shun Anglo-Saxon media stores such as Waterstone's and Borders, they keep coming to Germany's Media Markt and Thalia. German home-video sales have been virtually flat for six years, according to Screen Digest. In America, by contrast, sales are down by 29%. Sales of German magazines and newspapers are declining, but in a more orderly fashion than in Britain or America, and from a higher starting-point. As a result, they remain attractive to advertisers.

Why the attachment to tangible stuff? "There's a collecting mentality," suggests Keith Feldman, the head of international home entertainment at 20th Century Fox. Although Germans do not consume film or music as avidly as Britons or Americans, they are far more committed to buying it. Blockbuster, a video-rental store, failed in Germany, and digital streaming has not caught on. Fox has even begun to put videos on sale...

Invest Md Bill Moving in House

The Invest Maryland bill got a preliminary OK from the House of Delegates on Thursday and skated through a volley of amendments mostly unchanged.

The program, Gov. Martin O'Malley's top economic initiative, would allow the state to auction $100 million in tax credits to insurance companies to fill a venture fund with at least $70 million. (The auction has a floor of 70 cents on the dollar.) That money would be invested in high-tech early stage and growth-stage firms.

One change the House accepted of the seven proposed by Republican lawmakers added a reporting requirement to the bill. The Department of Business and Economic Development would have to post an annual report on its website detailing the purchasers of the tax credits and recipients of Invest Maryland investments.

"It's intended to spread the sunshine," said House Minority Leader Tony O'Donnell, who proposed the amendment.

Other amendments would have carved out funds for investment in urban areas and written DBED out of the bill. Under the House proposal, two-thirds of the funds raised by the tax credit auctions would be invested by private venture capitalists and one-third overseen by DBED. One proposal would have put the public share of the money under the control of the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, and another would have given it all to private VC's.

The firms that invest on the state's behalf would repay all of the principal and 80 percent of the profit on successful investments.

Invest Maryland will likely be up for a final vote Friday, and then head to the upper chamber, where senators are considering changes of their own.

House Moving Toward Mandatory Worker Verification

Mandating that all U.S. employers verify their workers' legal status through government databases is the first item on House Republicans' list of immigration bills designed to further their "enforcement first" agenda. Sticking to a familiar GOP script, Republicans couched employment verification as a jobs initiative at a hearing today, saying that mandatory checks on employees would ensure that openings are reserved for citizens and other legal workers.

"Jobs are scarce, and families are worried. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, 7 million people are working in the U.S. illegally. These jobs should go to legal workers," said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith, R-Texas.

Is it about jobs creation? Not really, except perhaps for government workers required to follow through on the employment checks. But a mandatory verification system as Republicans envisage it would certainly have a broad impact on U.S. business. Immigration Subcommittee ranking member Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., said it would decimate the nation's agriculture industry, where illegal immigrants fill about 75 percent of the jobs. The American Nursery and Landscape Association said that mandatory verification alone would simply drive businesses and workers underground and off the tax books. In the worst-case scenario, it drives those jobs overseas.

Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., who chairs the subcommittee, is acutely aware that Americans might not take farm-worker jobs. "If we have an unmet domestic need, let's find a way to do it in a legal way but not open the floodgates" to legalizing an illegal workforce, he said after the hearing. (That statement appears to stray from Republican talking points, considering that GOP leaders are opposed to any form of legalization for undocumented workers.)

Agriculture is the only industry speaking out about the adverse effects of a mandatory verification system. In the past, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business groups protested mandatory checks,...
